Appendix M: Arrangement of the Hexagrams

Fu Xi Arrangement

This arrangement was probably developed between 150 BCE and 250 CE. The first hexagram is on the first line on the left hand side. The sixtyfourth hexagram is on the eight line on the right hand side.

In the 11th century CE, Master Shao Yung enclosed it in a circle, calling it The Great Wheel as it demonstrates the unity of Heaven and Earth. Chu Hsi placed it in his edition of the Yi Jing, thereby greatly inflating its importance.
