Appendix M: Arrangements of The Hexagrams

MaWang Dui Sequence

This arrangement is the order of hexagrams in the Ma Wang Dui Manuscript. This manuscript is also known as the Silk Text. In 168 BCE, the Marquis of Tai had a copy of the Yi Jing and two copies of the Dao De Jing. Also found in this tomb were a number of hitherto unknown manuscripts, believed to be representative of of Huang Lao Daoism, were also found in the tomb. ) Yates (1997) is but one example. These scrolls, as was appropriate to his station in life, were written on silk. « Commoners would have had bamboo scrolls. » The site was excavated in 1973. News of this discovery slowly filtered out. The first translation of this version of the Yi Jing into English was in 1985. This manuscript shows numerous small, but significant deviations from text edited by Wang Bi. The first hexagram is on the first line on the right hand side. The sixty fourth hexagram is on the eight line on the left hand side.
