YI JING OR ZICHOU
ONE INDIVIDUAL'S [ MIS ] [ - ] [ ? ] UNDERSTANDING
Publication History
This document was originally a term paper for James Klee.
[ The author of Points of Departure, Aspects of the Tao ]
I received an "A" for it, along with comments from my
classmates that they didn't understand anything in the
paper except the bibliography.
Appendix L: The Yi Jing as a Model for
Growth: A Personal Tale was a different paper for
James Klee. Copies of it were distributed to classmates,
who understood most of it.
A little expansion, and some textual revision, and it was
distributed to a few more of my friends. Who still didn't
understand most of what I was saying.
In 1991, I found PODS, and promptly put the paper in it.
A few revisions, and some discussion with people who both
read, and understood what I was saying, resulted in some
changes to the script.
In 1995 I signed up with a few Internet mailing lists on
Daoism and the Yi Jing. Then my paper blossomed in size.
For various reasons, I was not on those mailing lists, from
1998 to 2001. I was studying material on the Yi Jing,
amongst my other projects.
During that time I studied that material, and I changed my
outlook about things I had written. Sometimes an expansion,
other times a contraction. In still other instances, revising
the text to be twice as contradictory as it was, and thrice as
obscure. All in effort to increase the clarity of what I meant.
Obfuscation implies clarity? Only in a Daoist work, could that
begin to make sense.
Note: I didn't number the versions, until I after I distributed
them on PODS.
- 1982: Version 0.0:
The Term Paper.
Photocopies were given to everybody in the class.
- 1984: Some revisions, and photocopies given to a few
more people.
- 1990: Version 1.0:
First public release of this paper.
Distributed on PODS as 1PER_1_0.arj.
I don't know how many people read it, as a result
of it being placed on PODS. I placed it on one
BBS on PODS, but after three or so months, found
it on about a dozen PODS Boards.
- 1991: Sometime in 1991, I wrote on PODS Tao Study,
that I didn't
think anybody other than James Klee --- the
psychology professor for whose class I wrote this
paper --- had completely read this paper. I
promptly recieved several requests for the paper
from individuals who claimed that they would
read it.
- 1992: Version 1.5
Distributed on PODS,
NovaNet and BeastNet as 1PER_1_5.arj.
I have been told that this found its
way onto at least one CD-ROM of
share-ware/bucket-ware.
- December 1993: Version 2.0:
Distributed on PODS and NovaNet as 1PER_2_0.arj.
Biggest change was the addition of the Appendices, and
an expansion of the bibliography.
- 1994: Version 2.1
Main revision was the addition of a list
of books on Daoism and the Yi Jing that
were then in print. Distribution unknown.
- 1996: Version 2.2
Distribution unknown.
- 1997: Version 2.5
Distributed to one BBS on NovaNet.
Added a new appendix, and updated the bibliography.
- 1998: Version 3.0.
Distribution unknown
- Either Version 2.2, 2.5 or 3.0 was
briefly available on the World Wide Web.
- 2000: Version 3.0.1
Briefly available on the World Wide Web.
- April 2001: Version 3.0.2
Extensive editing of the text. Added several appendices.
Formatted the entire paper for the Web, and placed it
at http://yi-jing.faithweb.com.
- 22 May 2001: Version 3.0.3
Broke the main paper out into different chapters.
Placed the paper at http://yijing.faithweb.com.
To anticipate a question. When I obtained yi-jing.faithweb.com,
I did not know that yijing.faithweb.com was available.
- June: 2001: Version 3.0.4.0
I copyedited the entire paper. This is not the best way
to do things.
- June: 2001: Version 3.0.4.1
Added Appendix X, Appendix W and graphical breakdown to the
commentary section.
- July: 2001: Version 3.0.4.2
Minor corrections and revisions. Added navigation header
at the top of each document.
- July: 2001: Version 3.0.5
Segregated paper into two sections.
Part 1 is at http://yijing.faithweb.com
Part 2 is at http://yi-jing.faithweb.com
A Real Copyeditor rewrote this section
at http://yijing.faithweb.com.
